Is Sun Protection For Our Skin Really Important?

The truth is, we need some sun exposure in our lives. Without the sun hitting our skin, our bodies won’t produce vitamin D and that is not good because Vitamin D helps in the absorption of calcium for healthier and stronger bones. Of course, we also get this from our diet and supplements so we actually need just a little sun. That is because too much of that same sun can spell bad news for us, especially if it’s unprotected exposure to the UV (ultraviolet) rays. Skin and eye damage, skin cancer, and alterations in the functioning of our immune system are just a few of the adverse effects.

Why do I get sunburned?

The light that comes to us from the sun has UV rays with it, and when too much of it touches our skin, burning and tanning could happen. Premature skin wrinkling and aging could also happen, and these could lead to skin cancer.

How can I protect myself from the sun?

Apply sunscreen. SPF of 30 or higher is recommended. Be sure to get the broad spectrum that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. If you’re going swimming, use water-resistant products. Apply generously and frequently.

Keep away from the sun, usually 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., when it is strongest.  And don’t forget that on cool, overcast, or cloudy days, UV rays are still present and as dangerous as ever.

Wear Sunglasses. Harsh sunlight can burn the cornea and cause cataracts.

Finally, cover up. It’s among the best ways to protect our skin.
