Making MLB picks today is going to become more prominent over the next six months as the 2022 season is finally going to get underway. It was a rough offseason for both the players and the owners. And the league might have lost some fan support along the way.
Baseball will look very similar to how it has been played over the past decade. But there will be an expanded playoffs this season. Six teams from each league will make the playoffs and that should add some excitement along the way.
There is no need to wait until the end of the season. To figure out what the playoff field will look like. Here is a closer look at what teams are likely going to play well this season and reach the playoffs.
American League Playoff Race
The American League has one loaded division, but then there are also some really bad teams. Out of the 15 teams in the league it feels like there are only 8-9 teams that will have a realistic shot at reaching the playoffs this year.
The East Division in the American League should be the best one in baseball. And there are four teams that could reach the playoffs. Those four teams are the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, and Tampa Bay Rays.
The Blue Jays have the best lineup in that division, but the Yankees aren’t far behind. New York should have a pitching staff that can dominate. And that will be enough to get them into the postseason.
In the American League Central, the Chicago White Sox are clearly the best team on paper. Minnesota or Cleveland could provide a decent challenge, but Chicago is going to win one by close to 10 games.
The AL West could be fun to watch this year as the Angels and Mariners look to take down the Astros. Houston doesn’t have as high of a ceiling anymore. But they aren’t going to fall enough to not win the AL West.
When it comes to the Wild Card, two of those spots MLB are going to be picked up by the AL East teams. Here is a look at the projected playoff field in the American League:
- Chicago White Sox
- New York Yankees
- Houston Astros
- Toronto Blue Jays
- Boston Red Sox
- Los Angeles Angels
National League Playoff Race
The National League appears to have more teams looking to tank than in the American League, but there will still be some great playoff races. The only division that might not have much competition is the NL ,MLB Central.
Milwaukee should run through the Central Division this season as only the St. Louis Cardinals might provide some resistance. With such little competition, the Brewers could make a run at 100 wins this season.
The best race in the National League should come from the East Division as there are at least three teams that could win the title. The Atlanta Braves are the defending World Series champions and they are the favorites to win that division title.
The New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies are also good enough to win the East, but each team has some flaws as well.
Last season, the NL West was one of the best divisions MLB in baseball and that could be the case yet again in 2022. The Los Angeles Dodgers are expected to dominate this division as well, but both the San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres are good enough to be a playoff contender.
The Wild Card race in the National League could be fun to follow as well, but there won’t be a ton of teams battling for those spots.
- Los Angeles Dodgers
- Milwaukee Brewers
- Atlanta Braves
- San Francisco Giants
- San Diego Padres
- Philadelphia Phillies
